Metal roofs have become incredibly popular in the past several years. You’ll increasingly find them on every type of structure, ranging from traditional and modern homes to commercial buildings. If you enjoy putting Christmas lights on your roof, how you approach this with a metal roof might be a bit different.
Hire a Professional
No one likes to be told that they shouldn’t undertake a home project on their own. But crawling around on a roof is dangerous. First, you’re talking about climbing a ladder while loaded with unwieldy decorations. Then, you’ll need to find a way to attach them to a smooth surface.
Even if you discount the fact that you could be seriously hurt, don’t forget that you might damage your roof if you step on or grab the wrong place. Since it’s not a good idea to walk across a roof, it might be time to hire a professional if you need to hang holiday lights or do anything else on top of your home.
Hanging Christmas Lights on a Metal Roof
Assuming you have someone that can do the job safely, there are several ways to hang lights on a metal roof. Here are some of the most widely-used options:
1. Magnetic Clips
Since your roof is metal, you can use magnets to attach things to it. This makes hanging lights quite simple if you’re willing to purchase the right clips.
Basic C7 and C9 magnetic clips, which you can buy online, will easily attach to your roof. You can then slide the lights onto the clips. Another option is magnetic hooks, which you can use to hold heavier objects.
2. Magnetic Lights
Believe it or not, there are actually Christmas lights made to attach to metal surfaces. These magnetic lights are a bit pricey, but you’re also paying for convenience. You just choose your options and then easily attach the lights to your roof.
3. Command Strips
Another way to hang lights on your metal roof is with outdoor command strips. These are durable hooks that you can use outside and then remove after the holidays. They may be a bit more work than the magnets, however, because you have to peel and stick each one and then work to remove them come January.
4. Plastic Clips
The last option is to use plastic clips to attach your lights along the metal roof’s edge. These are a simple and budget-friendly way to attach lights along the edge of your roof but may not work as well for the main area of your roof.
As you get ready for the holiday season, consider your safety above everything else. Sure, lights look beautiful on your home, but you don’t want to take an unnecessary trip to the emergency room. The same holds true with metal roof installation and maintenance. When in doubt, ask for help.
